menloEach year, the Spivey Hall Friends take a trip to an exciting location with first-rate musical opportunities.  Last summer, nineteen Spivey Hall Friends, including Executive & Artistic Director Sam Dixon, enjoyed outstanding performances at Austria’s prestigious Schubertiade Festival in Western Austria, devoted to the music of Franz Schubert. This year, twenty-two travelers will experience Music@Menlo, located in Menlo Park, the gateway to  Silicon Valley. Chamber-music power-couple cellist David Finckel and pianist Wu Han,  well known to Spivey Hall patrons for their captivating and high-energy performances, are  co-artistic directors of both New York’s Chamber Music Society at Lincoln Center, and  Music@Menlo. Each summer they head west to California, having invited international  friends and colleagues for several weeks of intensive music-making, chiefly of instrumental  chamber music. Along with first-rate chamber music, participants will enjoy extraordinary  accommodations at a four-star deluxe hotel, plus nearby excursions to a winery, gorgeous  gardens, fine dining, and Stanford University’s art museum, all in the company of other music-lovers. Many thanks to Friends Council members Susan Hunter and Jeff Adams for organizing yet another wonderful trip!

SPIVEY HALL FRIENDS ATTEND SCHUBERTIADE SCHWARZENBERG IN AUSTRIA

Nineteen Spivey Hall Friends including Executive & Artistic Director Sam Dixon enjoyed outstanding performances at Austria’s prestigious June 2015 festival in Western Austria devoted to the music of Franz Schubert.  Highlights included solo recitals internationally renowned pianists Sir András Schiff and Christian Zacharias, two chamber orchestra concerts of Schubert symphonies, compelling Lieder recitals by tenors Ian Bostridge and Christoph Prégardien, and a delightful rendition of Schubert’s “Shepherd on the Rock” featuring soprano Diana Ramrau and clarinetist Paul Meyer.  Extraordinary accommodations and cuisine; beautiful views of snow-capped peaks, green valleys, mountain waterfalls, and Lake Constance; exploring the areas with excursions in surrounding towns as well as in Germany and Switzerland; and the pleasures of Friends traveling together all enhanced the success of this trip.  Many thanks to Friends Council members Susan Hunter and Jeff Adams for organizing yet another wonderful trip!  Details of the Spivey Hall Friends 2016 Tour Program will be announced to the Friends this fall.
