“Mars vs. Venus: A Baroque Battle of the Sexes”

G.B. Pergolesi: From Maid to Mistress (La serva padrona)  & Excerpts from Henry Purcell: Dido and Aeneas

Giovanni Pergolesi’s sparkling two-scene comic intermezzo La serva padrona, written in 1733 as a sweet palate cleanser between the acts of a serious opera, becomes the main course in this evening’s exploration of the perennial friction between men and women, with “tragic relief” provided by the climactic act of Henry Purcell’s 1688 Dido and Aeneas.  Both works will be performed in English.

Presented by the Department of Visual and Performing Arts/Division of Music
