CHRIS POTTER UNDERGROUND featuring Adam Rogers, Fima Ephron and Nate Smith
Spivey Hall Debut
“The emergence of Chris Potter as one of the most dynamic young players in jazz has been fascinating to behold” (Chicago Tribune); he is “easily the most compelling saxophonist of his generation “(Detroit Free Press). “His work is remarkably free of clichés and default licks….daring yet precise, with clean edges and unexpected implications….he is something special” (DownBeat).
Potter and his musicians perform selections from his 2015 ECM release, Imaginary Cities.
As Potter observed in an interview for Eric Nemeyer’s Jazz Inside Magazine: “Something that I’ve noticed, just in the past few years, is that it can be very useful for me to have some kind of extra-musical idea — I guess to kind of begin the process of inspiring some music [and] illustrating a certain feeling or a mood… [The] idea that kind of came to mind was sort of a vision of cities, and then maybe a utopian idea, too. . .like maybe cities could be better than they are and just imagining what cities could be. So that is what imaginary cities means to me.”
Potter expresses this vision in the four movements of Imaginary Cities: “Compassion,” “Dualities,” “Disintegration,” and “Rebuilding.”
