Baroque Concertos: Akadamie für Alte Musik Berlin
Sunday, April 6, 2008 3PM Spivey Hall Debut
$40
The Akademie began as a courageous display of musical solidarity against the East German socialist regime. Now, more than 20 years later, the AAM Berlin's musical glories extend far and wide. The ensemble records exclusively for Harmonia Mundi, and in addition to their series at the Berlin Konzerthaus, they appear regularly in the great concert houses of Europe: London's Wigmore Hall, the Palais des Beaux Arts in Brussels, the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris, the Zurich Tonhalle, and the Vienna Musikverein. "The best period orchestra in the world" (Early Music America) made a triumphant first US tour in May 2005 with concerts in New York (Carnegie Hall), Chicago, Boston, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Washington, DC. "Rarely have I heard a concert so infused with the joy of music-making," reported John Von Rhein in the Chicago Tribune: "So engaging were the efforts of this troupe that it was easy to overlook their laser-like precision." "The ensemble is superb," agreed The Boston Globe: "it's as much fun to watch these performers listen to one another as it is to hear them play."

VIVALDI Concerto for Strings in G minor; MARCELLO Concerto for Oboe; GRAUN Concerto for Viola da Gamba; ERLEBACH Ouvertüre; J.S. BACH Concerto for Two Violins in D minor, BWV 1052
