Love’s many moods and aspects are explored in this special Valentine’s Day program. John Ireland declares that “Love is a Sickness Full of Woes,” while John Duke compares it to “Politics,” Roger Quilter seeks out “Loves’s Philosophy,” and Celius Dougherty even resorts to Funk and Wagnall’s to look up “Love in the Dictionary.” As Purcell and Britten affirm, “Music is the Food of Love,” which (if loves goes wrong) can lead to being “Overweight, Overwrought, Over You” (Thomas Pasatieri). Additionally British and American songs by Peter Warlock, Michael Head, Gerald Finzi, Richard Faith and Ben Moore (among others) complete this heartfelt (and often humorous) tribute to that most glorious of emotions. Love.
